Not to long ago I was diagnosed with Gentital Herpes. I have been married now for almost 10 years. When the doctor told me, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Nothing could have shocked me more. How could I get herpes? I wasn't unfaithful and neither was my husband. So how can I have herpes? Well I have had it for 12 years now, maybe more. I believe it was me who contracted it and gave it to my husband. Although it very well could have been him who gave it to me. There is no way to know for sure and I don't really believe it matters anyways. I am the one who is having outbreaks, not him. I'm the one who had unprotected sex with someone who had it. Yep, I knew he had it. He told me months after the fact. See we believed what alot of people believe, you can't get herpes if the person you are with isn't having an outbreak. Well that's not true. There are periods when you are active with the virus and not having any symptoms. It's called asymptomatic shedding. See even if you have never had an outbreak and don't know you have herpes, you could be contagious. That is the way the virus works.
Ok, let me back up here for just a second. As I mentioned earlier, I have had herpes for 12 years or more. For me it wasn't dormant. I was just blind to the symptoms. For years, I have had this problem with my leg.. Every once in a great while, my leg would get this sensitive, tinglely feeling. It was kind of like having goosebumps. It would bother me for a day or two. By the time I would think "Gee, I should really go to the doctor", it would be gone. Well, guess what that was? It was my herpes warning bell, called a prodrome. That is my body's way of warning me that I'm going to have an outbreak. This last outbreak caused swelling to a very sensitive area of my gentital area and that is what got me to the doctor this last time.
